What size battens for trellis?
Trellis battens are usually 25mmx16mm or 38mmx16mm. At City Fencing, we provide these sizes:
- 38mm x 19mm x 1.8m
- 38mm x 19mm x 3.6
Both the options are designed to provide the best support to the trellis panels, which can help climbing plants and withstand different weather conditions. The 1.8m is better for smaller trellis sections and 3.6m is good for giving extra strength and durability to bigger panels.
We also provide installing services and can assist you with choosing the right batten size.
What is the best wood for a trellis?
The best wood for a trellis is pressure-treated softwood, like cedar. Softwood is a good option which is affordable, durable and can protect the battens from decay. Our pressure treated provides support to the climbing potatoes and withstand the outdoor conditions.Â
What is the legal height for a trellis in the UK?
In the UK, the total height of the fence (including trellis) must not exceed 2 metres (6ft 6in) for boundaries in the rear or side garden. If the fencing is used for public places like a highway or a pavement, the limit is 1 metre (3ft 3in).Â
If a trellis is added at the top of the fence, it’s still added in the total height. We advise checking with your local council if you are unsure about your fence or if your property has any additional restrictions.Â
How to support a freestanding trellis?
It’s important to support a freestanding trellis for it to withstand strong winds and support the climbing plants. One commonly used method is to fix the trellis post in the ground using postmix or concrete which can make it stable. For smaller and lighter trellis, you can use planter boxes or large pots filled with soil and ballast that can give an additional support to make them stand upright. If the trellis is placed on a deck, it can be supported by posts or brackets.Â
