How to attach fence rails between posts?
The first step to add fence rails to the posts is to make sure that the fence posts are set in the ground firmly and at equal height. Next step would be to cut the rails as per the distance between the posts.
Position the first rail in a way that it fits snugly against the post that leaves a small gap from the ground to protect it from any moisture. Check if it’s perfectly straight and then fix it in place with galvanized screws or nails. Repeat the same process if you are also fixing middle or top rails. Make sure they are evenly spaced and give even support to the post.
Backing rails are fixed to the back of the fence panel and not between the posts. They help in giving additional support to the panels and keeping them straight. They can be screwed at top, middle or bottom depending on the fence height.
What is backer rail?
A backer rail is a horizontal bar that runs across the fence panel from its back and supports it. It helps in connecting the fencing boards to the post. This gives extra strength to the fence by supporting the vertical boards and also keeps the panels straight against adverse weather conditions.
What is the spacing for fence backer rail?
The spacing between for fence backer rails depends on the height of the fence. The height should be set in a way that it provides enough support to the boards to keep them intact.
Short fences (4 ft tall) would usually need 2 backer rails – one at the top and one near the bottom.
Medium height fences (4-6ft) would usually need 3 backer rails – at the top, middle and near the bottom.
Taller fences (more than 6 ft) may need more than 3 backer rails and more closely spaced rail to ensure proper strength.
Should fence rails go on the inside or outside?
Fence rails (including back rails) get installed on the inside of the fence. This makes the outside look cleaner and better finished.
Having the rails on the inside also gives extra security as there is no support from the outside to climb up the fence. To give a fancy look to the fencing or in case of shared boundary fencing, the rails can be placed on both sides.
What size do fence rails come in?
Fence rails usually come in standard sizes ranking from 6 ft to 12 ft. The width and height can depend on the fence type that are used for.
Smaller fence panels can do with thin back rails whereas the heavy ones would need thicker and stronger fence rails.
